There is no question that we are in a challenging time. With many of us laid off, practicing social distancing, with children home and life uncertain, it can be easy to spiral into anxiety and neglect self-care. But it is critical that you take great care of yourself—it will greatly help your mental health and keep your immune system strong. Here are some ways we recommend you practice self-care during this uncertain time. Your health depends upon it!

Exercise

Scarborough Yoga  is live streaming their classes! Just download Zoom and then go to their website. You can fill out a class waiver and follow directions to take classes. If you are not in actual quarantine, go for a walk or run outside.

Meditate

Meditation can really help lessen anxiety. It is also not some strange or difficult concept. It is simply sitting with yourself for a period of time-even 5 minutes. The New York Times has a helpful guide on how to start.

Limit your time online

Watching too much news, or mindlessly scrolling on your phone, can increase anxiety and a negative mindset. Installing a website blocker will temporarily force you off websites that trigger you.

Take a bath

An indulgent bath can made even better with bubbles, salts, oils, and candles. Why not give yourself a facial or pedicure, while you are at it? Taking time for something that feels luxurious can help you make the best of this trying, uncertain time.

Practice Gratitude

You can do this in a journal, writing down one thing you are grateful for each day, or try writing paragraphs about everything that helps you to feel blessed. Sharing the things you are grateful for with your family at the end of the day can help connect you deeper.

Take up a hobby

Escape our worries by engaging in a hobby that you do just for the fun of doing it. Maybe you make something with your hands: sewing, crocheting, beading, embroidery, and woodworking can provide a great escape from fear and worry. If you want to feel useful, here are instructions for making face masks that you could donate to people and/or hospitals who need it.

Read out loud

Reading out loud is not just for young children. It can be a wonderful way to spend time with roommates, a partner, or your family.  Also just read when you can. Check out writer Jia Tolentino’s pandemic recommendations.

Cook and bake

In a time of self-imposed isolation, cooking can be an act of self-care. Try a new muffin recipe, get creative with a pasta sauce, look up recipes to use up the things in your vegetable crisper.

Do video therapy

Many therapists are offering video-conferencing as an option for their patients, during what is a highly anxious and isolating time for many. De-clutter

Organize the drawer that has been begging for order, rearrange the living room furniture, or finally get your filing cabinet in order. It is a great time to get your house in order—it is spring, after all!

Learn something new

There’s an almost unlimited number of online classes on websites like edX or Skillshare, whether you want to learn a new language or how to change a tire.
